CALIGARI)1920b & w50 min16mm (Directed by Robert Wiene, photography by Willy Hameister; with Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, Lil Dagover) This most famous of experimental films has been praised for its unrealistic settings used to express psychological anguish. It has also been condemned as an example of postwar decadence and as doubtful decorative art. It achieved great critical success both at home and in American and French intellectual circles but it affected film production, even in Germany, less than its world-wide prestige might imply. Today, it is still one of the strongest horror films produced. (Musical soundtrack, English titles)
