A new world of religious tolerance and economic opportunity emerged in 17th-century Holland and in England that held promise for Jews and other religious minorities. In Eastern Europe Jews, working closely with the Polish nobles, were helping to develop the agriculture and industry of new territories. These days of greatest hope for Eastern Europe's Jews were brought to a violent end by a wave of invasions and rebellions that left the land desolated. Still, in the west the ideals of Enlightenment were beginning to offer new hope for a future of tolerance. (withdrawn)
