(Directed by Jiri Menzel; with Vaclav Neckar, Jitka Bendova, Jiri Menzel) In a small town during World War II, Milos starts his first job at a railroad station. Much of the film deals with Milos' growing sexuality; his failure and, finally, his new confidence because of seeing an older woman. What makes the film so potent, however, is the switch from a comic framework into tragedy; it is a leap that also transforms the situation into a universal one.
