  • (Directed by John Kent Harrison; with Rip Torn, Colm Feore, Wendel Meldrum, Sheila McCarthy, Colin Fox) After meeting renowned free-thinker Walt Whitman at a medical conference, a young doctor decides the poet's philosophy of human compassion offers a new approach to treating the mentally ill. Returning with Whitman to his small-town asylum, the physician soon discovers that town folk--and his own wife--are outraged at Whitman's radical ideas of individuality and guiltless sexuality. But gradually, Whitman's gentle rebellion works its liberating magic on the asylum's barbaric techniques--and on the doctor's own faltering marriage. A deeply moving, triumphantly optimistic story based on actual events.
