Thompson, Sian Leisa Davies, Torquil Campbell, Fiona Reid) Between 1867 and 1914, a multitude of lost and lonely British children were sent off to Canada in search of new homes and love of a family. The "home children," as they came to be known, had no parents or guardians. They were orphans waifs, foundlings, warehouse boys and girls simply abandoned during the advance of Britain's industrial age. Many of these children imagined Canada to be a kind of heaven on earth. Unfortunately, many were disappointed. Life was demanding; often cruel and demeaning, a constant battle for survival. Very few were lucky enough to find the life they had dreamt of. Today almost 5% of the Canadian population consists of descendents of the "home children."
