6810AELITA, QUEEN OF MARS*AELITA, QUEEN OF MARS*1924b & w111 minvhs (Directed by Yakov Protazanov, script by Fyoror Otsep and Alexei Faiko from the novel by Alexei Tolstoy; with Yulia Solntseva, Valentina Kuinzhi, Nikolai Batalov and Igor Ilinsky) Los, an engineer living in Moscow, dreams of Aelita, the Queen of Mars, and builds a spaceship to take him to her. They fall in love, but Los soon finds himself embroiled in the planet's proletarian uprising. Russia's most famous pre-Revolution director, Yakov Protzanov, was brought back from exile for this big budget, science fiction feature. The actress Yulia Solntseva. as the sensuous and scantily-clad Aelita, provides exotic glamour to the Soviet Union's most famous film prior to Potemkin. The real star of the production was designer Alexandra Exter. His spectacular constructionist sets and costumes electrify the screen as would the production of Metropolis three years later.
