The torrid chemistry between screen stars Lana Turner and John Garfield makes this film seethe with passion. Frank (Garfield) is the hitchhiker offered a job at a roadside diner. Cora (Turner) is the voluptuous and hot-blooded wife of the café owner. Upon first sight, sparks fly between them, setting in motion the wheels of suspense and highly-charged drama. The provocative Cora intends to run away with Frank, but she also wants to keep the café. So they plot the murder of Cora?s easy-going husband, Nick (Cecil Kellaway). However, their sinister deeds soon spark the interest of the law. Hume Cronyn gives a memorable performance as the couple?s legal ally, whose hands are full when the lovers? fits of jealousy and betrayal surface, building into a powerful and ironic finale.
