The dispute involved Northwest Airlines, based in Minneapolis, and the local TV station WCCO. Northwest claimed that WCCO's investigative series on safety violations at Northwest was "distorted and untruthful". The council upheld the airline's claim by a margin of 19-2, despite the insistence by WCCO that they had told the truth. Don Shelby, leader of WCCO's investigative "I-Team", said he might have been willing to accept "distorted or exaggerated, but not untruthful".
