7061Chinatown*CHINATOWN*1974color131 minlaserdisc (Directed by Roman Polanski; with Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston) Chinatown at first appeared to be a classy little thriller. What we have since discovered is that, although it was filmed in the '70s, in color and CinemaScope, and most of it in the broad daylight of Southern California, it is really a 1940s film noir homage. It does not "depend on nostalgia or camp for its effect, but works because of the enduring strength of the genre itself. In some respects, this movie actually could have made in the 1940s. It accepts its conventions and categories at face value and doesn't make them the object of satire or filter them through a modern sensibility. . . . --Roger Ebert.
