7180WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE, A*WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE, A*1974color147 minlaserdisc (Written and directed by John Cassavetes; with Peter Falk, Gena Rowlands, Katherine Cassavetes, Lady Rowlands, Fred Draper) John Cassavetes presents his morose yet romantic view of mental disorder, with Gena Rowlands as the helpless victim of a bullying blue-collar husband and a repressive society. The scenes are often unshaped, expected cues to the audience are not given and meanings don't emerge easily. Yet Rowlands is so moving, so touching that we know that there is a meaning here--somewhere. And as a result the film is more like life than a film. Emotion in search of meaning, justification, resolution without finding any. [Funded by the Department of Comparative Literature] (Restricted to use on University of Washington campuses only)
