7189BAND WAGON, THE*BAND WAGON, THE*1953color112 minlaserdisc (Directed by Vincente Minnelli, screenplay by Betty Comden, Adolph Green, music and lyrics by Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz; with Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Oscar Levant, Nanette Fabray, Jack Buchanan) Tony Hunter (Astaire), a Hollywood singer/dancer, feels washed up and heads for Broadway to revitalized his career. His old friends Lily and Les Martin (Nanette Fabray and Oscar Levant doing their best Betty Comden and Adolph Green impressions) have an idea for a funny little Broadway show and Fred, er, Tony, agrees to do it. Bigshot "artistic" director Jeffrey Cordova (Jack Buchanan) proclaims it's a modernistic Faust and insist on hiring a prima ballerina, Gabrielle Gerard (Cyd Charisse), to star opposite Tony, er, Fred. Well, it's hate at first sight and the show flops. But, remember this is a musical, romance, "let's do it right this time," and a triumphant opening night bring all to rights. Musical numbers include: "Shine on Your Shoes," "Dancing in the Dark," "Triplets," "That's Entertainment," the "Girl Hunt" ballet.
