(Directed by Raoul Walsh, screenplay by Ivan Goff, Ben Roberts based on a story by Virginia Kellogg; with James Cagney, Virginia Mayo, Edmond O'Brien, margaret Wycherly, Steve Cochran, John Archer, Wally Cassell, Mickey Knox, Ian MacDonald, Fred Clark) James Cagney returned to gangster films, older but as forceful as ever, as the psychotic hood, Cody Jarrett, with a mother obsession. Virginia May is his neglected wife and Edmond O'Brien is the cop out to get him. When he's finally captured, Jarrett escapes a murder rap by doing time for a lesser crime. Still, "the big house" can't hold him. He escapes right into one of the most famous finales in movie history.
