As hard as he tried to stay neutral politically, the Chinese, in the midst of The Cultural Revolution, were not pleased with the end result of the film. Antonioni was aware of the repression in the country and could not avoid showing it. Here he travels to Shanghai to film the port and the industries. The film ends with a presentation by Chinese acrobats.
