7740ROMEO AND JULIET*ROMEO AND JULIET*1968color138 minvhs (Directed by Franco Zeffirell, screenplay by Franco Brusati, Maestro D'Amico, Franco Zeffirelli based on the play by William Shakespeare; with Leonard Whiting, Olivia Hussey, John McEnery, Milo O'Shea, Pat Heywood, Robert Stephens, Michael York, Bruce Robinson, Paul Hardwick, Natasha Parry, Antonio Pierfederici, Esmeralda Ruspoli, Roberto Bisacco) Romeo and Juliet remains the magical high point of Zeffirelli's career. To see it again is to luxuriate. It is intriguing that Zeffirelli in 1968 focused on love, while Baz Luhrmann's popular version of 1996 focused on violence; something fundamental has changed in films about and for young people, and recent audiences seem shy of sex and love but eager for conflict and action. I wonder if a modern Friday night audience would snicker at the heart-baring sincerity of the lovers.--Roger Ebert [Letterboxed] (Restricted to classroom use only)
